Topic 6: Printer

Welcome to the Ella Show... :(

Haha. This word came up on the random word generator I found on Google and I almost had a spastic attack. It was a feat of superhuman strength, self-control, and honesty to not click the generator again.

Like flies to wanton boys are we stationery people to the printer gods...they screw us over for their sport. (That's what Shakespeare would have written, if he had to print out King Lear.)

Due December 5 or thereabouts. Please?

Cereal (Ella)

Tried and failed to pay homage to one of my absolute favorite, total idols in art today, Lorraine Loots (check out her unbelievable miniature works, 365 Postcards for Ants, on her site). I love, love, love her pieces and bought her book which should be arriving in December sometime, and I can't wait. I would love to develop my watercoloring and draftsmanship skills to even remotely come close to her aesthetic. It's so charming, fantastic (in the fantasy, truly wonderful sense, as well as the colloquial), and realistic all at the same time.

"Anyway, cereal," said the super fangirl, embarrassed.

Candle (Monica)

A short explanation for this ridiculousness:

So there's this candle company called Diptique, and they have a scent called "Baies," which is French for "berries." The problem is that every time I look at it, I keep thinking it's missing a "b" to read "Babies." So this is me fixing that. Also, I think babies smell like warm milk, so I made a fake advertisement. I REGRET NOTHING.

The cake looks a bit saggy, but I don't think he minds. Pentel pen in sketchbook.

Topic #3: Candle

Posts due by October 13. Go!

Also, I will be participating in #Inktober as much as possible (also through Lion in the Sun @lioninthesunps, along with my coworkers), primarily through Instagram (@romearrow) but will also be sharing intermittently on Facebook. If anyone else wants to come along or post any Inktober doodles here, I'd love that! All about sharing and fostering the doodle bug, so if this helps motivate, awesome.

Magician (Ella)

I am reexamining the work of Quentin Blake, who has always been one of my earliest most beloved illustrators.

Magician (Monica)

I got distracted by my interest in the typeface Memoriam, and decided to blatantly and shamelessly rip off of the New York Times Magazine.

Magician (Margaret)

Decided to do this quote from an American Magician who goes by "Teller". Part of magicians' charm it seems, is the ability to make people believe lies.

The next topic is 'Magician'. Posts are due by 9/29. Have fun!

Fairytale (Margaret)

Not a fairytale exactly, but Janghwa Hongryeon Jeon is a Korean folktale that tells the tale of two sisters who are driven by their evil stepmother to drown in a nearby pond. I was a bit frustrated while working on this and started destroying the surface, but then I liked how it seemed to eroding.

Fairytale (M)

UGH. So I greatly underestimated my scanner, which means that I can't vectorize my drawing because of the crappy resolution (100ppi. whaaaat)

Here it is scanned and cleaned. There is the major issue of the emptiness of the lower right hand corner of the piece, but this is what I get for procrastinating....

I used the font Waza as my base, then drew over it in pen. I was originally going to write "Once upon a time" but decided to use "Happily ever after" because I wanted to write in a curly script, and I thought this phrase would work better with the aesthetic.

Fairytale (Ella)

What? I am never early for anything.

I loved the "Three Billy Goats Gruff" when I was a kid. Maybe it's not quite a "fairytale" but I liked this idea. So I did it. Subtitles could include "Technology Ruins Everything" or "Angry Goats are No Match for Angry Birds".
